My dad hit the big 6-0 last week and we threw a surprise party to celebrate. It was a big joing effort between all of us kids, with everyone pitching in to do their part to make it a special night for him. We got him in the right place under the guise of a family dinner, but he surely didn't expect the evening to take such a twist!
We quietly had pizza and opened presents as a family at first.

Then - what's that? Who could be at the door?

At this point, I switched to Marinda's faster camera/lens, so she's got most of the pictures. I did get some shots of the spread, though! Janet came up with foods that reminded us of my dad over the years and made signs explaining their significance.

I don't know that I've ever seen my dad work the room as much as he did that night, but he didn't have much choice with all the people that came join in the celebration!
We love you, Dad, and we hope that you felt as loved that night as you really are!

Hi Carolyn, Janet showed me your blog and all the darling pictures you have taken. Grandpa Gessel would be so proud of you because it looks like you inherited his love of photography but you have definately taken it to an even higher level. Your pictures of the food at your dad's party as amazing and very professional and you have really captured the people, especially your children. Way to go! Keep up the good work! You've really got a good eye. Good job.
Love, Aunt Cynthia
Thank you, Aunt Cynthia! What kind words!
I wish I could have shared this interest with Grandpa while he was alive. The relative ease of digital photography compared to film photography in decades past really makes me appreciate Grandpa that much more. When my mom showed me his old light meter, I was blown away just considering the extra steps you had to take back then only to have your picture properly exposed! It makes me feel more connected to him, alebit a little later in life than I would have liked. :)
This was fun! I love the pic of him looking towards the door - cool that you caught that moment! I'm glad we could do this for him.
